After all the great Dubstep Djs that visited Austin in 2009 I wasn’t sure what would still be in store for 2010. The free show thrown by Scion last night with Starkey, Distance, MRK-1 and Austin’s own Grommit has me very optimistic about 2010! Beauty Bar has been hosting these Scion shows as they bring in some of the biggest names in Dubstep to Austin. They’ve considerably stepped up their club’s sound which is important when booking the names they have.
Austin Texas Dubstep Dj Grommit always opens at these and he consistently brings great tunes and mixing so the headliners see that Texas knows what the deal is. The big name djs this guy has shared the bill with are impressive. Grommit is an important part of the original weekly Dubstep night in Austin ‘Weight’, Friday nights at Plush. http://twitter.com/bobgrommit is the URL for Grommit on twitter.
Starkey is definitely at the top levels with the most current stars in it right now. His turbo crunk street bass sound had the place going and utilized the full force of the amped up sound system. He was also kind enough to play a never before heard tune from his new album! His energy behind the decks is matched by few and combined with the power of his original tunes and remixes Starkey is a great dj to see live! He is from Philly and is commonly booked along side the biggest acts from the UK. You can follow Starkey on twitter here.

Mrk-1 and MC Nika D offered loud and heavy dubstep with Uk style MC work on top. I did hear a few of my favorite new songs from Breakage, Joker, and Skream in the mix. Nika D interacted with the crowd in between flows to keep people into it.
Distance played last and by the time he got on people were so into it they started to dance on the stage. He definitely did not disappoint. There was a great variety of sounds and beats in the mix as he took things to another level. (Not easy to do playing after Starkey.) Also he played all vinyl vs. some of the digital means djs are becoming increasingly fond of. Many in the crowd noticed the all vinyl set and were thrilled by that. I was just thrilled by the mood of the set he created, regardless of vinyl vs. digital. Grommit was kind enough to help me snap a photo from on the stage. Here is the link Distance on twitter.
Here is an awesome tune of his on Youtube that he dropped in the mix.
